Alterations to External Stairwells in the Fruit & Veg Market
STARTS March 2016
ENDS April 2016
At each end of A & B Row and C & D Row in the Fruit & Veg Market we have external stairwells protruding from the ends of the buildings, four in total.
To give us a bit of extra circulation space for the construction programme, we are building new sets of stairs inside the market buildings and knocking these external stairwells down.
At the eastern end of C & D Row (the Pavilion end of the Buyer’s Walk) we are building the new internal stairwell in the part of Unit D75 that we have deliberately left vacant. Elsewhere the new stairs will be built in the unused buyers walks.
As always, the works will be contained and controlled. There will be some noise during the work hours of 08:00 – 18:00.
Once the external stairs are demolished, we’ll be making changes to the road layout at each end of the buildings. To the East we are moving the road closer to the building to make way for the Interim Distribution Units on the Pavilion site.
Cleaners’ Accommodation Block Construction
STARTED November 2015
OPENS September 2016
Brand New Covent Garden Market is not only about buildings. It’s about people. Our traders, our customers and suppliers, and the team who help run the market.
We have a team of around 50 cleaners who work day and night, rain or shine, to keep the market clean, tidy and safe. The team who helps us keep our deeply held commitment to sending zero waste to landfill.
Behind the refurbished Multi-Storey Car Park, next to the new Recycling & Waste Compound, we’re building an Accommodation Block for our cleaners. A place for them to change, to shower, to eat together. To catch their breath before returning to the challenge of keeping the market moving. Especially on those wet and windy days.
The Cleaners’ Accommodation Block is set to open in September this year.
Construction of the New Fruit & Veg Market Loading Docks
STARTED January 2016
ENDS August 2016
In the south corner of the market, next to the new Electrical Substation, we start construction of the new Loading Docks for the Fruit & Veg Market.
These three new, modern and covered docks will replace the Irish Dock from August.
During construction, there will be a phased use of the current Irish Dock from mid-April until the new docks are ready in August. At the same time, we will be changing the road layout in that area as part of works to the loop road.
Nearer the time we’ll send out emails and flyers so everyone knows what’s going on and when.
Other Works on Site
The New Flower Market
As you enter the market from Nine Elms Lane, you’ll see work is underway to build our new Flower Market, ready to open in January 2017. The diggers have moved in, excavating and working on the ground, with piling starting shortly.
New Recycling & Waste Compound
Next to the Multi-Storey Car Park, behind the hoardings, we have been preparing the ground and laying the foundations for the new Recycling & Waste Compound, with football pitches above. The ground is ready and you can see the steel frame of the building is now going up.
Electrical and Sprinkler Switchovers
In March, we will be switching over to the Temporary Electrical Substation and the Temporary Sprinkler Tank. The exact dates are not yet confirmed, but we will let you know as soon as they are, as well as how the switchover process may affect you.
Construction Programme
Here is the current Construction Programme for the next few months. As with any project of this size, all dates are indicative and are subject to change. As we get nearer to the start date we will be able to confirm timings with more certainty. The start date refers to the date that area is handed over to the contractor and is not the date significant works might start as, often, preparatory works are needed before demolition or construction can begin.
