Irish Dock and South Vehicle Car Park

On Monday 23 July, we permanently closed the Irish Dock and we are now starting to demolish it. The demolition will take roughly three weeks. If you traditionally used the Irish Dock, you should now be using the space around the west end of the South Vehicle Car Park for parking, loading and unloading, as well as the Consolidation Area in the very south of the market.

Sheringham’s move into the IDU on 21 July has now removed a large number of vehicles from the area which also frees up more space.

The next step is to take a larger area of the South Vehicle Car Park so we can start building Phase One of the new Fruit and Veg Market. We’ll share further information on this directly to you soon.

Closure of the Link House Exit Road

On 1 August, we are closing the Exit Road by A Row and Link House until June 2019. We are doing this so we can start the construction of the Security Lodge for the new Fruit and Veg Market.

EXIT ROUTE FOR HGVs

From 1 August, no HGVs (over 3.65m) on the Fruit and Veg Market will be able to exit the market via Nine Elms Lane. Instead, they will need to use the exit by the old Flower Market leading onto Wandsworth Road.

EXIT ROUTE FOR VANS

We are creating a U-turn by units A47 to A52 so vans (3.65m and under) can exit the market onto Nine Elms Lane, via the Main Entrance Plaza. We’ll be monitoring this route going forward and it is only accessible for vans not HGVs.

MULTI-STOREY CAR PARK

The Multi-Storey Car Park will continue to operate as normal with no changes to entry and exit routes during works.

PEDESTRIAN ROUTE

If you walk to the Fruit and Veg Market from Nine Elms Lane or the Multi-Storey Car Park, you will still be able to do so. The route is changing slightly and will be clearly signposted.

SIGNAGE

We’ll have signs in place throughout and traffic marshalls on hand at the start.

West Bridge Deconstruction

In June, we carried out a trial removal of some of the boards that contain asbestos on the underside of the West Bridge.

As expected, the trial showed that by completely sealing off the area with a triple layer of protection, and along with other safety measures that we put in place, there was absolutely zero asbestos contamination. You can be reassured that we are removing the asbestos in a totally safe way.

The trial identified a number of challenges which meant it did take longer than planned. We’re updating the methodology before we start the works and we’ll let you know the revised timings and programme when we have them.

Sheringham’s move into the IDU

On Saturday 21 July, Sheringham’s were the third and final tenant to move into the new Interim Distribution Units that sit underneath the Food Exchange. This move was the final piece in freeing up space on D Row and in the South Vehicle Car Park, so we can build the new Fruit and Veg Market.

We’ve been working with Chocolate Films to capture the move of all three tenants into the IDU. Once this is edited and finished, we’ll be sharing it with you so can see how the moves went and also get a look inside the new units.

Market footie competition on Friday 17 August

To celebrate the opening of the new football pitches on the rooftop of the market’s Recycling Centre, we’re teaming up with Powerleague Nine Elms to put on the New Covent Garden Market Cup.

It’s a 5-a-side football competition on Friday 17 August for tenants and workers at the market. Kick-off is at 12noon.

You’re guaranteed one hour of football, or longer if you progress out of the group stages. Anyone at the market can enter a team. We’ve got a special price for market tenants and staff of £35 per team. That includes a large pizza and six energy drinks for each team, as well as trophies and cups for winners and runners up.
