The South Vehicle Car Park is changing on 1 October 2018

Following the demolition of the Irish Dock, we are moving onto the next stage of the redevelopment of the market.
On Monday 1 October 2018 we are changing the layout of the South Vehicle Car Park so we can start building the first phase of the new Fruit and Veg Market. Read below to understand how the area is changing and how it affects you.
UNDERSTANDING HOW SPACE IS USED
Over the last year we’ve been working with VINCI St. Modwen to carry out extensive surveys so we understand exactly how space in the market is used. We now know how many vehicles are on site and using the South Vehicle Car Park at any given time.
REDUCING SPACE IN THE SOUTH VEHICLE CAR PARK
By moving the three tenants into the Interim Distribution Unit (IDU), we have moved over 100 vans. This reduces the volume of vehicles in the South Vehicle Car Park, freeing up space for construction.
We know we still have enough space for the vehicles that currently use this at peak times, with some additional capacity should any unusual peaks occur. The rear 35% of the South Vehicle Car Park was used as a car park up until 2016 when we relocated all the cars to the Multi-Storey Car Park.
We are changing the layout of the South Vehicle Car Park in three stages. The following drawings show each stage with the number of vehicles in the area at peak time, which is 02:00 in the morning.
STAGE ONE: CURRENT LAYOUT
On 23 July we closed the Irish Dock, which has now been demolished. The red line shows the current hoarding line.
STAGE TWO: MONDAY 1 OCTOBER
Stage Two starts on Monday 1 October 2018 and lasts for roughly 20 weeks
The area outlined in red shows where the hoardings will go up. Everything inside this line will be for construction and will be out of use. This will begin on Monday 1 October from 08:00.
I’M A CUSTOMER, WHERE DO I PARK?
Looking at the drawing above, you should park in the Loading/Unloading Vans area. If you need dock levellers or space to consolidate, please use the Consolidation Area in the south as labelled above, as this can hold HGVs.
I’M A TENANT, WHERE DO I PARK?
To save the best parking spots for customers, we recommend that you park in the areas labelled Tenant Van and Box Van Parking. We will not be policing this, but ask for your help in freeing up the spaces nearest to the units for customers.
Tenant HGV Parking has been provided to the south of the IDU for atriculated and rigid lorries.
If you have a pickup truck or non-commercial vehicle, please use the Multi Storey Car Park.
I’M A SUPPLIER, WHERE DO I PARK?
For delivering to wholesalers, you can continue to use the existing loading lane along D Row. If you need a dock leveller, use the Consolidation Area in the south of the market.
ADDITIONAL PARKING SPACES
There is also capacity for vehicles alongside Thessaly Road (shown in yellow on the drawing). We will also have extra space for vehicles on the Vacant Aprons (the green areas on the drawing) across the market.
We’ll have signage to help direct you to the new areas, as well as traffic marshalls on hand at the start. Traffic marshalls will be on site throughout the night, and will help to help familiarise you with the new layout for the first few weeks.
STAGE THREE: JANUARY 2019
Stage Three is due to start in January 2019.
We will be changing the layout of the South Vehicle Car Park, affecting how you use this space. As previously advised, this is Stage Three of the layout for that area.
The hoarding line for the West block will extend up to the edge of the aprons of units D1-D23. This means that the west end of D Road will no longer be in use. You will need to use the new road to go around the perimeter of the market.
WHERE WILL MY VEHICLES GO?
Much of the space will remain as it is now. The new road will make it easier and quicker for lorries and forklifts to access the consolidation area. There will be space around the edge of the market for vehicles to park and load. We are reviewing other options for parking around the site and we will update you on this when we have this finalised in the New Year.
We will have new signs in place and traffic marshals on site at night to help guide and assist vehicles.
THE BENEFITS OF DOING THIS NOW
January is a quieter period on the market which makes it a good time to adapt to the changes before the market gets busier again.

For customer parking, will there be parking space lines on the floor?
Yes, and these lines will dictate what vehicle size can fit into that space.
Where will all the customer arctic lorries go to load/unload?
In the Consolidation Area, along D Row (as per now) and in the remaining SVCP area, such as the hatched area at the West end of D Row. Please refer to the Stage Two drawing for this.
Can the tenant HGVs that park on site for long periods of time be removed to ease congestion?
No, because these HGVs are in operation.
Can HGVs use the area south of IDU? Will Sheringham’s vans be moved?
Yes, Sheringham’s vans will move to free up space in the south of the IDU for tenants to park their HGVs. We have labelled this area in the Stage Two drawing.
How many spaces are there in the IDU car park?
110 but with capacity up to 112. This number does not exceed the total number of vans belonging to the three IDU tenants.
Is there spare van capacity in the IDU for tenants?
No, this area is full with vans belonging to the three IDU tenants.
Where will all the customer arctic lorries go to load/unload?

Where else can HGVs belonging to tenants go to park, load and unload?

Your results are based on a time that isn’t the peak for market activity – how can you assure this works?
This is a snapshot, and we understand that activity on the market changes every night. However, this captures one of the peak times of year, and we have ensured we have enough space to support any unusual peaks that occur outside this time – 60+ spaces spare across Thessaly Road, vacant aprons and end of A/B Row.
We also have the hatched area that runs along the end of D Road where vehicles can load/unload. We have the Apron at the end of D Row which will also have some capacity for vehicles, plus space along Thessaly Road.
What will happen to the Sunday market? Where will we park our vans on a Sunday if it continues? There won't be enough space.
The plan is for the Sunday market to continue but it will have to adapt to the space that is available. If you currently use the SVCP to park your vehicle on a Sunday night, you will need to use the South side of the SVCP. We will share more detailed information on this soon, including a map of the area that shows you where you should park.
